Eldridge was named after Jacob M. Eldridge who arrived in the area back in 1846. He bought cheap land, and soon after German immigrants moved into the region. The area began to develop as railroads came about in the 1860’s, and this augmented the influx of settlers. Eldridge faced tremendous growing pains during its humble beginnings. The railroad had financial problems and had to be relocated, and a smallpox outbreak put the city into total isolation a few years later. In 1904, a fire brought great destruction to the city’s business area, and in 1918 a tornado hit the area, doing heavy damage to homes and businesses. However, the city recovered from these tough times, and by the 1950’s the population began to grow at a rapid pace. Farming boomed within the area, and the building of industrial parks led to new business development, helping the city to further grow. Modern-day Eldridge is a beautiful place to live.
